Spanish Mauser

Post by Matt72601 »

So the wife got her a Vetterli last week and the guy that had it also had a Mauser that i really liked.. So she surprised me and told me yesterday that we could go buy it for my christmas present. Few questions other than checking headspace is this rifle safe to shoot modern loads. And the guy told me it was 7mm but i have read alot about being redone in 308. What the fastest way to check that. Thanks in advance.

That looks like a typical 1894 Mauser, this is the rifle that the Spanish army used against us during the Span-AM war, German made, nice small ring Mauser. If there is no import mark this stands a good chance of being one of the thousands of captured rifles that Bannerman bought from the government after the war and sold for a few bucks each in his catalog for years. That dies not look like a 7.62mm conversion, that looks like an original

What a great looking stock. COOOL all of the converted ones i have seen were marked. I am betting it is a 7mm. Nice one. :Drool1: :vcool: :vcool:

Now the bad news, 7mm Mauser is expensive and hard to find. Reload time :)

If you don't reload, try to find the 173 grain bullets. I've had limited success with the 139 grain stuff, sure it's lower recoil, but it's not as accurate as the 173 grain. The original military ammo weight is 173 grain, I think it's due to the rifling twist in the bore.

Maybe together we can make those without a mauser jealous ? ... JYD owns everything though .. pffftttt
I do own one of each of these :) Back in the days before the huge haul of milsurps started to flow in this was what we collected. Old Mauser's that you had to search creation to find any information on, Argentine, Chilean, Brazilian, Spanish and so on. Fun times.

Had one of those in 308 a long time ago. Was afraid to shoot it so I sold it to a buddy and I think he did shoot it a couple of times. Kicked like a bear and was not very accurate. He sold it later too. That stock has great looking wood! Congrats! Bill :D

They are all Mauser's, all great in their own way, either in caliber, smoothness or history. You really won't go wrong with any Mauser providing it is not bubbaed or chopped up

Now for a handy small compact Mauser in a common caliber, look here  http://www.russian-mosin-nagant-forum.c ... f=6&t=8019

And Welcome :alien:

Love that stock too! As far as the 7x57 goes, it is getting hard to find, but it's worth the effort....I am hard pressed to think of a finer round.

You can reload it yourself and load it low to help preserve antique 19th century rifles, or I think Privi loads it.
