1924 M12 range report

Post by Celt »

Hey all, just got back from range testing the model 12. Wow. How can such a slim gun be so fat! I didn't clean it like i usually do when i get something this old. She was a bit stiff when the action heated up. I just got done doing a complete tear down. There was grease that I'm sure was older than me that had to be scrubbed with solvent and a tooth brush. What a well made weapon! The workings inside the gun are tighter than any new firearm I've ever owned! Any way here's the video, as you'll see the"slam fire" should need some practice (and a clean gun). The fore end was hard to holds onto. The good news is that every shell hit that jug at 20,30 and past. I shot a plastic shelf on the way out from about 15 feet away. Three shells, one ragged hole about four inches around. With #8s. I'd use em in a house.

Any questions our comments are most welcome

Thanks for watching.

Almost forgot...here's the poor jug!
The big holes are #8 shot from about five feet away. About as far into my house as a bad guy would get.

Sweet! Nice shooting! The slam fire definately looks like it is more difficult that what I've seen haha. You will have it down in no time

Well it sure looks like you had some fun. I've never done the slam fire because I don't have anything that does it. Well I have a Model 620 Savage I've never shot that's about 40 years old I guess. That might do this but I'm not sure. You did good buddy.

Thanks. I felt like an idiot. We can't all be Rambo! I feel confident that it will defend my family though. Maybe I'll try that again with some sticky gloves on now that its clean

:vcool: :vcool: :vcool: It is hard to beat these old shotguns for fun. Within the last year I came into possession of a 1926 Browning auto-5. There was a gunsmith receipt in the case from 1973, where someone had had extensive work done to it. It has a newer (1968 +) stock, but it works like new.

Try to find a Browning stock set for $59 today. :)

Its deffinatly a sweet looking shotgun. I still love the patina. I guess being a '24 that the action is pretty slick? I noticed a huge difference in my newer '06 870 and my '71. The '71 is way smoother and less clunky. But they both work. You know what they say about these old shotguns. They don't wear out they just wear in

It got pretty gummy when it heated up. After i took it apart i saw why. The grease in there was no longer grease it was more like putty. I scrubbed it out but there are a ton of nooks and crannies. Next time i clean it I'll get some more. I'll shoot it again and clean it again. The action feels rock solid. You have to pump it to see what i mean. My mossy had all kinds of wiggle. So did my master mag. This had almost none and its almost 100 years old. Next time i try the slam fire I'll do it off my shoulder. Also its a12 gauge with a full choke..hard to hold and fire that fast. My hand kept flying off the for end. + my hands were getting a bit numb.
That was the first time i have fired a gum since my rough rider video.

That is a long intermission haha. I think its been a few weeks for me. I'm finding out that I like shooting rifle/shotguns more when it starts getting cooler. That way I can shoot the mosins and stuff without the recoil effecting me so much haha. Its amazing what a pull over will do. Some of these oldies are pretty messy. The old .22 I just bought is still oozing black residue filled oil even after I cleaned it haha. So you still have the mossberg you just got? I was wondering if you had traded it off for the winchester.

I don't have the mossy. I did trade it for the m12. Did you see the butt pad on this gun? Its plastic. The #4s were 3.75 drams. I felt those through my coat. I know JYD.........conditioning!

Haha ok. So far I like the pads on my 870's. Turns the recoil into more of a push. With my mosin's I get popped pretty hard. Not that I'm recoil sensitive. I just don't have the nature padding most guys do. I just a tall skinny dude haha. I take it, but I definately feel it haha. Its not too bad though.
