My wife's Christmas present

Post by ponycarman »

I had been tossing around the idea of getting my wife a .22 rifle for Christmas for a while. She enjoys shooting pistols but hasn't shown a ton of interest in rifles. I would love for her to learn these skills. I feel they are important skills to know. I figured maybe if I bought a rifle she can call her own, maybe that will get her a little more interested in learning. I wanted to get something inexpensive but handy and reliable. I figured it would be an older model 60 or something. Well I dropped by a pawn shop today to see what I could find. There was only one "cheaper" .22 rifle on the shelf so Iooked it over. I was pretty impressed and bought it for $89. Not to shabby. Here she is haha.

5 shot magazine and looks like micro groove rifling like the marlins. Its in great shape and is full of character. The blueing has changed to a brownish color. It has a beautiful patina looks to it. The stock is in great shape and shares the same aged patina look as the action. I dont really know anything about these rifles. Is there anyway to approximate the date of manufacture? And If any .22 gurus's have any info about it I would love to learn more about it. Thanks guys!

I hope she enjoys is :)

I know it was a $25 rifle when new, not Stevens lowest priced offering, I think these were made in the 40's, and like all Stevens .22's it was a good one. I love these old steel receiver .22's :)

Sweet! I tried to do a little research and the year range 1936-1948 kept popping up. I would like to grab as many of these old .22's as I can. They are awesome and well built and cheap. Not many people seem to want them.

I want them, all of them :) I have several Stevens .22's, a Model 56 I just got last summer, and I believe at least one Model 84 stashed away as well as a few they made for Sears under the JC Higgins name.

I don't have room for all of them haha. But I would like to grab a few more. They are handy rifles to have around :)

Most of them are constructed for adult size shooters, a real plus, the Model 56 is sized perfectly for me , has a tang mounted peep sight, and obviously was made for serious shooting.

Thanks man. I cleaned it up as best I could tonight. The barrel was clean with good rifling. The action was pretty grimy haha.

Probably been collecting dust in some closet since 1955, I always have to scrub them when I first get them.

Thanks fella's! I love the patina look. That was one of the reasons I was drawn to mosins haha. It has a bent bolt and two threaded holes on the side of the reciever. I wouldn't mind finding the right mount for the rifle. For a future option at least haha. I also spotted some solder on the front sight. Not sure if this was a repair or if it was to build the sight up to tune the rifle when sighting it in. If it shoots as well as it looks then I dont really care haha.

You got that right. This thing is solid. And still very tight. Rifling looks very good too. You would not be able to tell the age of the rifle by looking through the bore.

Good start. I bought my wife a model 15 Remington to encourage her to take an interest in the shooting sport. Well it worked to a degree. The 15 sits in the locker and it is her rifle, but she now prefers an M1 carbine as it is just as easy to shoot as her 22. Hope your wife has the same motivation, all it needs is a start. (and maybe a carbine)

I hope she takes more of an interest in it. She enjoys shooting but I kinda think she is afraid of rifles. Her family wasn't against guns but they were never really around them. I guess neither was I but I fixed that by jumping in with both feet haha. I've told her that with the proper technique and not being afraid of the firearm, she can shoot any firearm our safe. She looked at me like I was crazy haha.

Thanks guys! I honestly got lucky on this one. I wasn't expecting anything like this. It was the only cheaper .22 on the rack so I looked it over. And it fit the bill perfectly. I went to the shop because I had seen a couple marlin model 60's there a couple weeks ago haha. I'll see if I can get some better pics of it tomorrow. These cell phone pics don't do it justice.

.22's or M1 carbines, best rifles to start a shooter out with :)
