New AK
I had an issue for some reason about spending good money on an AK for a very long time. Don't have any real reason why I didn't like them, just didn't care for them. Several months ago I made the plunge and got my first AK, it was one of the WASP Rommies and it truthfully much better than I expected. About three weeks ago I traded it off for a different type and thought I was finished with the AK's, until last night. On ARMSLIST.COM was one listed very close to the house and the key to the ad was it was made in Egypt by MADDI. After doing the GOOGLE search it looked like this one was a better made than most of the others. For what its worth I bought it today, and being the clean freak I am the first order of business was to strip the rifle down and clean, clean and clean a little more. As dirty as it was it must be a very reliable gun because it was super dirty. Things I did like was the lack of threaded barrel for muzzle Brake or the lug for bayonets. This one came with the Dragunav type stock and other than a minor amount of surface rust it cleaned up very nice. Is it true that the Egyptian models better built or closer to the Russian design or not.

Re: New AK
I have had a pre ban Maddi for over 20 years, from the outside it looks like a piece of shit, at least when I got it, rough casting marks left on the front sight , nasty looking wood with a slight warp in the buttstock, lots of tool marks here and there. 20 years, lets say 10,000 rounds of ammo, and not a single failure to fire. I put that rifle through it's paces when I got it, over 1000 rounds in three months with no cleaning and the rife riding in the very dusty trunk of a yard car, mud test, water test, freeze test, always it worked without fail. Now it has East German stock and pistol grip, being before the ban it had a pistol grip, not the thumbhole stock, a Soviet top cover with the ribs, I left the rest alone, and it sits waiting in a secure spot should I ever need it fast. I have the Bulgarian SLR95, as good an AK as has ever been made, but it's the Maddi that is on duty, and makes the range trips.
It is very hard for anyone to fu** up the AK design, so far as I know they all work, some may look better than others thanks to more attention to final finishing, but they all work.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I don't know for sure about when this one was imported, but it does have a little more Umph to it as far as the overall weight of rifle. Set down last night and loaded up 10 mags, everything from 10rd to 40 rd, and had every intention of wasting a bunch of shells today. I even pulled out the 75rd drum mag to see how much it would stand up to. But its raining and cold on top of that so it will wait a day or two.

Post some pics when you get a chance. I always like taking a look at AK's. By the way, that ARMSLIST.com is a great site! I didnt know about it and checked it out when I read your post. I got several hits in my area on some rifles I am looking for. thanks for the website!

That is nice Mike! I never did know you had that toy! A really nice example.
Edit: Do you have any pic of the Polish sling you need? I do have a few unknown sources of slings. I will start looking a little, but a pic from you would help.

Re: New AK
My first was a WASR/63 that "yelled" beater but worked every time. I picked up a MAK-90 with a thumb hole stock (which I hate) from a guy who admitted he's only shot blanks through it and that was right after he got it. There was a lot of dust in the barrel and a ding here or there but with the addition of a Choate stock set and a Tapco G2 trigger I'm good to go. My Semi auto of choice is a AR in 6.8 SPC as it packs a bit more wallop than the 5.56 (although I have 2 of them as well)
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

My little Yugo folder with the 20rnd mags makes a great little truck gun when we go explore jeep trails. Easy to get in out of the vehicle with it when we go explore something on foot.

Pictures of my AK
Took me a while to get the photos and they are not super but still gives a decent idea about the newest toy. Took it out back today along with two others and wasted a few rounds. To my amazement this AK without the muzzle brake had very little muzzle climb and with iron sights was shooting tight groups, which is a testament to the rifle because my eyes are not that good.
