Russian Moisin Nagant M44?

Post by steve8261948 »

How can I lighten the safety spring in my bolt? Too hard for me to put the safety on and off again.

The best thing to do is to NOT use the safety. I doubt if you took a pole here that you would find one person that actively uses the saftey on a mosin. The best safety is to have an empty chamber. Welcome to the forum. You might try shooting it a few times and maybe the safety will loosen up some. :D

Is there any place on the net that explains how to take the bolt apart?

Make sure to adjust your firing pin before taking your rifle to the test drive . You can find " adjustment " videos on YouTube as well .

Note: You do not want to want to adjust the safety spring in any way because it's also the firing pin spring and will cause problems.

The safely on the Mosin is best understood and then not used, open the bolt to safe the weapon.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

One thing to understand is if you are pulling back on the safety that is actually also the firing pin spring so when you engage the safety if you shorten or lighten the safety spring you are in turn lightening the effort of the firing pin and spring. That too can make the rifle fire when you don't want it to which makes messing with the firing pin and spring downright dangerous. Learn to live without walking around with a shell in the chamber and the safety on and thinking everything is just fine.,More people are killed that way then you would ever believe is possible. Chamber empty and bolt open and the rifle is then for sure safe! Bill  Boy that first sentence has to be the worst one I ever constructed in my entire life! Does it make sense now guys?

Thanks for posting. This is a good and honest question. Once you disassemble the bolt and put it back together enough to become familiar with it then the spring's function will make scense. While it is best to safe the weapon with a empty chamber or open bolt, the safety is still a viable option, just not easy. A light application of grease on the contact areas on the bolt and cocking knob may make it easier, but the spring tension will always be strong. Thanks for the post.

Pull the cocking piece back and turn it to the left. It locks the bolt where it won't open. If you open the bolt then close it it's easier to use the safety.

I gave my cousin's son a 40 Tula for his first rifle and hes taking it hunting. The safety is to hard for him, so I got him a safety that clamps around the trigger guard without harming orcaltering the rifle. It works like an sks safety and have had no problems. There are a few different models floating around.

LC knows about the safety, he was joking because most Mosin shooters would never bother with the clumsy safety these rifles had. It was unlikely used much by the Red Army soldiers as a soldier locks and loads only when given the command to do so, and this tends to be at times when combat is imminent. Soldiers on guard would never safe a weapon unless they wanted to die, they knew they would never have time to fumble around with that dam cocking knob if they were surprised from the shadows. Finger off the trigger, or bolt open, it takes a split second to slam that bolt closed, easier than the safety.

I have never seen one of those. I have seen where people weld a ring onto the cocking knob that looks similar to the Swiss rifles. A definite way to screw up a perfectly good Mosin bolt.

I would never weld onto to bolt knob and ruin a good part.
The trigger guard unit is slick, it clamps on with set screws. I've seen a bulky aluminum one and a smaller steel one. Ebay has them I'm sure. Also there is a ring like the weld-on one that clamps onto the bolt knob but it looks gigantic to me.
