I've only seen two 44 and earlier wartime hex rifles in person. I've been trying to buy/trade for
the one for months now but the owner just smiles and shakes his head no. Its a 44 Izhevsk 91/59. The other was a 42 Izhevsk that was on its way out of a store when I was going in, I was too late.

A friend has a 45 M44 on an unmarked hex that may be a NEW receiver. That one is promised to me if he ever sells. 45 dated hexes seem to be way more common than other 40s dates, maybe winding down production and recycling more used parts?

They are neat for sure. On a side note, Finns had the opposite thing going on. Every Finn made rifle was on a recycled receiver. Rarely I've seen round receivered M91s and m39s online.

My first Mosin-Nagant was a J&G grab-bag Hex, Izhevsk '42 on a '21 Tula Receiver. ($79.00) I bought a two-fer to give one rifle to my son, and I gave him the '37, that was much prettier, as the better of the two guns. :D

I think they are unique but not rare. Wartime guns were put together with whatever was available. I would guess that the '21 original barrel was too worn or damaged to be servicable, so the receiver was salvaged. There is a lot of maching that goes into receivers, and not much to go wrong with them.

I also have a '38 Tula in a '34 Izhevsk receiver and a 1915 M-91 with both the pre '28 Tula hammer and the pre-28 Izhevsk bow on the same barrel shank, and in a 1895 receiver. (go figure)

The Russians and Soviets pulled all of this crap just to confuse the rifle's future owners. (It is a Russian thing)

A hex receivered Mosin in a refurb will be a great place to start! Pretty soon you will read and learn much more and the hook will be set! You will become a Mosin Addict! Good Luck! Bill

Either I had a major brain fart or that store had 2 1940's Mosins with hex receivers. I was 100 % sure that they had 1943 with hex , turned out they had 1944 Izhevsk with hex receiver . I ask them about it but they were not sure what they had . So now I have 2 Mosins : 1939 Izhevsk with round receiver and 1944 Izhevsk with octagon receiver .( Trying to figure out how to insert images )

I use a photobucket account, I upload them to there then post them to this forum. Photobucket gives you the links to post.

I post them from my computer to here. you just have to reduce the size. I use paint and sketch skew to 15x15% and then post with the upload button. :D

You can upload a pic to the forum but it must first be resized down, 640x480 would do it.
