No and No. You can get a good one from any arsenal and any year. I have a excellant 28 izhevsk and a killer 42 Tula. Same rifle using likely parts from every arsenal and any year.

Specific years and arsenals would tend to only be desired by some collectors. For shooting purposes, current barrel condition would seem to be the key.

They all perform the same, only the markings are different.

Sestroretsk, Westinghouse or Remington come to mind :2cents:

Some of the first Mosins were made in France for Russian imperial forces , I do not remember the name of the Factory , those are extremely hard to find . As someone mentioned earlier American made Mosins are not easy to find. Also Izhevsk 1943 are harder to find .

:D IMHO the arsenals are not the main factor to scrutinize a 91/30 or it's predecessors or followers, I think it is more the vintage that makes a difference. Of course Ishevsk and Tula are more common, but that is more a production number thing. That is why the Sestroryetsk, Westinghouse or Chatelleraullt are rarer and more precious. I won't even start on the Finns or the Chinese. :D

IMHO the pre-war production of WW1 and WW2 may have an advantage as far as finish and material used goes, you might even have a better bore coming from these years, if the usage is comparable to a wartime produced rifle (which we will never know). But you do not buy these rifles with a numbered report card, sometimes even sight unseen. :beek:

My pre-war 1932 Ishevsk Hex and my 1943 Tula Round have appr. the same remaining bore quality and therefore shoot about the same in rifle to rifle competition.....the Tula is 1/2 inch better on 200m, but the older lady beats that on 300m.... :geek: where she is better than her younger sister.
You see, as long as they meet our expectations, everything is fine. My son's Tula 33 Hex MO shoots like a clockwork, 5 bangs , one 3-4 group at 100m; gets worse at 200 and can't beat her sisters above. But works and shoots at expectation level. Just imagine what it must have been like to be on the receiving side, all these bullets flying towards you. I cannot imagine any German soldier to take a 200m shoot solution towards a Russian Infantry position NOT seriously.

And then there is the factor of the shooter's capabilities....which may change any factual experience with the same rifle. One of my buddies is a natural: You give him a loaded gun , he will shoot it two times, think about it and then will outshoot almost everybody.
NO MATTER with which Mosin he shoots, I only beat him once on 100m with my preferred Mosin.

All of us here should never forget that we are writing and talking about milsurp and refurbished: You might get lucky buying a good one....or not!

Good Night to y'all from the warm West, blue skies and the range waiting for me to get there on Tuesday.....

Hmm...If I had to pick one year and one arsenal as the best I would have to say Tula arsenal, year 1891. That's just me though....

The real gist of what everyone is telling with little jokes and teases added is read and find what are rare and search anywhere to find them! Good Luck and remember there are a lot of us out here doing the same thing! Bill :chuckles:
