I certainly have good information - thanks to this forum, but patience  will have to have to come from within...
Martin is quite correct. I had to also learn to be very patient with these Russian SKS. I only know of 2 rifles in the BBQ, with really nice stocks, that should right now sell for $400 or more. A 1953 or 1954 Izhevsk Refurbished one. I only have one BBQ rifle left in my collection, a 1954 Izhevsk with a perfect laminated stock.
There have been a number of nice Tula rifles on GB for the last 6 weeks that went under $400. Patience is the thing I had to learn before I become a real collector of these.

Well, I believe Martin's advice of being patient paid off for me, as I recently got a lead on, and landed a very nice '52 Tula with matching #s for $325. Dead-balls accurate... Bore like new... Loads of fun to shoot... Can't complain.

Thanks for the great advice.

Let me make a short, open, blanket comment. There are no good guns. There are no bad guns. Any gun in the hands of a bad man is a bad thing. Any gun in the hands of a descent person is no threat to anyone--- except bad people. -- Charleton Heston

Guns are not good, they are not evil. Save those descriptions for the people holding the firearm. -- Unknown

You did MORE THAN well on that one. If I was in the market for a '52, I wouldn't have hesitated. Congrats.

Wow, nice job! I am thinking of picking up a Cabela's SKS special and your's made me drool a little bit!

On the BBQ finish, I remember seeing a Mauser once that someone had "restored". It actually looked really "nice"...the stock had been sanded, stained a dark red and had high gloss varnish finish. The metal components were all a very consistent stain black. It turns out that the metal finish was actually a light coat of Rustoleum!
