My 1st 91/30 Mosin Nagant

Post by aarbeh »

picked up my first 91/30 today. Just gona clean her up and take her out sometime this week. Its a bit (understatement) confusing to identify these guys because of the mixing and matching that went on with them so any help would be appreciated. Observations to me are 1930 stamp, Star stamp and Hex chamber. My guess is russian tuala (spelling) of perhaps finnish make, although I read they made Hex and round in 1930 so maybe not. My other guess is that its not the original stock and looks updated or newer. So again my guess is it was an updated rifle ........ Im sure I am way off on these guesses :)

my attachments are invalid ? I want to post pics ? help ?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. The best way to post pics is to open a Photobucket account and post them through there. If you bought your Mosin still covered in the Soviet version of cosmoline, it is a refurbished rifle and many pieces and stocks were replaced at the arsenal during refurbishment. Just wipe down the stock with paper towels and clean the metal with mineral spirits and you are good to go.

:welcome: Welcome to the forum! Congratulations on your first Mosin - Nagant M 91/30! From what you told us, it sounds as if you have a 1930 Tula Hex Refurb. But we need more information to give you a good assessment. :post_r: :welcome2:

Welcome to the forum. Pictures must be reduced in size to fit on here. I use paint program to do that. :D

640x480 on the pics should do it, or use photobucket . Welcome to the forum, sounds like you have a refurbished Soviet M1891/30 rifle made at Tula in 1930 and refurbished after WW2.

HOLY smokes ! Glad to find a (very) active forum :)

I will try the paint program re-size trick.

Got a few quick question: picked up some brass 7.62X54R ammo but its 160 grain. I read that it can be risky to shoot heavy loads with the mosin because its setup to only shoot a 140 or 148 grain (got to go look it up again) bullet........................ opinions ? is it safe to shoot?

lets see IF I can get pics in this time

Very nice. :vcool: :vcool: I like the early hex 30s. On the ammo don't worry about it. I have shot every kind i can find and had no problem. Some of these actually like the heavy ball ammo. Shoot it and if it shoots good buy more. Not sure who told you it was unsafe but as long as the rifle is in good condition and headspace is good, have at it. I have shot 203gr out of a 91/30 and a M44 and i am still living. I also shot a box of 180 through a finnish M91 and it loved the ammo. :D I have never seen the 16o grain ammo, what brand is it? Make sure it is 7.62x 54 and not 7.62x51. Completely different ammo.

Oh good because I am itching in a big way to shoot this thing. the plan is to ( no driling ) mount a scope, wrap it in camo bandages and shoot a deer, well next year :) Got it all clean but need to brush the barrel still. a .30 cal works well I read.

I have been dreaming of this gun for months! Watched a crap ton of WWII soviet steamroller war films and have come to the scary conclusion that I need at least one more LOL

like a need another hobby ............ Oh well

I hear the UTG tr--rail works well for a scope mount, but that the ATi and others and junk

Thanks for the feed back everyone !

A .30 brush will work fine. I use a 8mm one but i have a 30 somewhere too. I have no idea on the scope thingy as i have never done it. 1 is never enough.

Your 91/30 will handle any 7.62x54r load you can find commercial or military, light or heavy. Nice rifle :)
