MN SR4759 load question.

Post by toddx »

Hello All
First time post here.
I reload for our MN from time and time and wanted to use up some IMR SR4759.
I want to plink and move that load up to hunting for pig and such.
I was going to start with 25gr of SR4759. I would like to get close to 2k fps but I am all ears at the same time.
On another note:
Of all the the reloading I do , .308, .223. .45ACP the 7.62x54R is the most stubborn to size. I read about ( on this forum) on a way to neck only size with a full length sizer. That will help but even with lube my Lee die has to work hard to to size compared to my other loading. I am by no means an expert but have been loading for 4 years or so.
Thanks for your help.

ps --I have Win and Norma brass.

If you are using the brass in the same gun you can use a neck sizer die to just size the neck. This would be easier and would make the brass last longer.
There used to be an article on this at surplus rifle.com but i think that sight is gone. They used a .308 necksizer die with a washer on the bottom so the case neck would not be fully sized and would center in the chamber better. There are some good experts here and i am sure they will give a better detail than i would...but hope this helps. :D :D

Most likely if your having a problem neck size its because the Lee 54r dies use a .308 expander ball and the die is sizing the case neck down to accept a .308 dia. bullet. The few Russian Mosins that I have measured have an inside case neck diameter close to .314" after firing so your squeezing the brass back down quiet a bit when you resize it. You can replace the .308 expander rod with a 303B expander rod if you using .310 to .312 dia. bullets. http://leeprecision.com/xcart/EZ-X-EXP-303-B.html

I've never used SR4759 but lots of people use it for reduced power loads with jacketed and cast bullet in a variety of rifle calibers. If you can't find the data your looking for in your manual give Hodgdon powder a call they will help you out.
