Shooting low?

Post by 1934hexreceiver »

When I went to the range last time I noticed I had to aim high on my target because my mosin was shooting low. Well here's the thing. Before I went to the range I had done some research and learned that it was very common for mosins to shoot high at 100 yard. I learned of the simple shrink tube trick to correct the problem. So that's what I did. When I got to the range I completely forgo about the peice of shrink tube I put over my front sight post. However like I said my mosin was shooting really low. When I would aim for the center of the target the rounds wouldn't even hit the target. They would go below it. My question is. Do some mosins shoot perfect at 100 yards. I know all mosin were sighted in at 300 yards. I haven't had a chance to go back to the range without the shrink tube and test where it shoots but if I'm right it should shoot dead on without the shrink tube. Can anyone shed some light for me?

Some are just right. They all seam to shoot different. I need to get a note book and start keeping notes on my different rifles -- so I remember how each one shoots.

Any mosin that shoots low is not a problem. You can always raise the rear sight.

Well as I said I think it's because I had the shrink tube on the front sight.

I have yet to try that but i have thought about it. Did you raise the rear sight and use it like that? I have a couple that shoot pretty good at 100yds but msotly they shoot high. :D

It's sounds like you just assumed because you read that so many shoot high your's would too and you "fixed" it before you knew if it needed to be fixed. Remove the shrink tube and start over. It's always a good idea to see how a rifle performs before you start tinkering with it.

That's exactly what happened. When I just got my mosin I didn't know that each one shoots different. I thought since all the others shoot high mine would to just because I thought that's how they were all made.

No harm done. Take the shrink off and buy another can of ammo.

It'll make a great story when we get to swapping out our "first Mosin SNAFU" tall tales somewhere down the line.

Yes, I have had many Mosins shoot low, or on target at 100 yards. All of my issued Mosins were sighted in to shoot dead on at 100 yards without the bayonet mounted, some of the refurbs shot to lower ranges also. This is why we suggest shooting the weapon first and then making sight adjustments.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I keep my notes directly on the targets as I examine them at the range, then stack the targets chronologically in my drawer about the rifle, while I'm trying to get one tuned up. That way I've got the physical evidence to back up my thinking when I'm looking at options.

Oh, that was weird. I noted that the posted I planned to respond to had posted a foreign link, so I edited out the url, then when I went to make the post the system said the replay wasn't valid because there was no such message. Guess I wasn't the only one who didn't like the commercial ad. :angry4:

Yep, major spammer. They usually wait until after midnight and do a three post but this one did 6 right in the middle of the evening. All of them had the same link to some competition shooting site that was most likely a virus infested place where you end up looking like that picture Matt posted in his Three Line Trifecta post, lol.
