m28/30 MM 1937

Post by rokka »

I like to say this is crown jewel of finnish Mosin's, but this one is not the best of them :b sad: but I'm still happy to get it to my collection before I find better un touched one :bwink:

As You all know m28-30 get it's first merits in 1937 when Finland arranges world shooting championships in Helsinki, second time it get's fame was in that larger match between Finland and soviet :bwink:. Sako made 440 of m28-30 rifles for this competition. Rifles were from standard line of machinery, but all these guns were selected between the numbers 48791 and 49467. After selection those guns was marked with MM punch on the left side of chamber. Also these rifles get nickel silver shooters badge on the right side of stock. 83 rifles was used in competition these were between numbers 48963 and 49466. After the tournament all rifles collected back to Civil Guard. Champion rifles ended to Sport Museum collection and all others to the Civil Guard districts for use. Most of them were used in both wars and thats why most of these are in pretty bad shape after all. After the wars army collect's all Civil Guard to armory's stored or send barracks to use.

Also those 83 rifles which take's a part of the competition were sealed with silkribbon and leadseal. Black ribbon was for team competition and blue-white for private competitors.

I think in 90's army sold much of the guns to abroad and this gun went to the Germany. So that's why there is stamped german CIP marking on it :( I'm truly sad with that... also the nickel silver badge has lost somewhere and someone grind the badges inset ( also might done that in the war ? ) also it is reblued at the same time.

Still, barrel and bore is in very nice shape. (I dont shoot it yet, because I get this yesterday)

Number is 49328 and it has Civil Guard number S 13468 (Pohjois Uusimaa)

Stock is made of walnut and it is one piece stock with SYT marking.

This blue ribbon is also for shooters I find that also this week from antique store and they dont actually know what it was 8-) :chuckles:

Very nice rifle with a great back story. To bad they all didn't come with one. The stories they would tell.

A lot of the Finnish army's Mosins ended up here in the states, or at least the 40 or so that ended up in my collection did. Nothing as special as this rifle, that's some history packed in there. 1937 the shooting is on the range in competition, two years later all the participants are shooting at each other on the battlefield. What prompted the Finnish army to sell it's surplus rifles outside of Finland and not offer them up to collectors within the country?
