148 Grain VS 182 Grain
J&G offers 7.62x54R 148 Grain and 7.62x54R 182 Grain ammo. for the same price. The 148 Grain is FMJ Standard LPS Ball and the 182 Grain FMJ is Heavy Ball ,Steel Case ,Yellow Tip Bi-Metal,corrosive. $82.50 for 440 rounds. My question is which of these is suitable for my MN91-30,T53,and M44. If someone has experience with this ammo,I would appreciate your help. I want to buy a large amount but I don't have enough information yet to make up my mind. If you can help with information I would be grateful. I know this has been talked about before , but I can't remember the specific details of which ammo is suitable for which gun.I do not hunt ,just mostly target practice and selfdefense. Thanks

Re: 148 Grain VS 182 Grain
I have only used 147gr bullets in my Mosins but my 30-06 would shoot as tight a group with180 gr bullets as with 150 gr.
Of course the trajectory will be different so some adjustment will be needed when switching.
Since the 147 gr was standard for rifles at the time 91/30s and M44s were made, I would think that the curvature of the rear sight ramp would have been designed for the trajectory of that bullet.
I don’t think a 30 caliber fmj is a good thing to use for self-defense in a home because of the danger of hitting someone in the next room(s) or even in the next house.

Some of my various Mosins are more accurate with the heavy bullet, but, it doesn't seem model specific, one M39 is accurate when Czech silver tip is used, not so much with the yellow tip. Another M39 is the opposite. Each rifle seems to like different round, then there are rifles that go either way, no matter what round you use, they either shoot good period or they just don't.
I would buy a few boxes and see how it does before a bulk buy. Personally, I like the heavy ball stuff.
because Czech ammo is hard to find

Yea .I agree with you Hombre about the rifle not being good for home self defense. My selfdefense is for 500 lb. mother bears with 3 cubs that are always around my 30 acres which is next to a National forest. I also carry a .357 because she has busted in my garage and run off with my chickens and chased my 2 90lb dogs. I do not want to shoot her unless it is my last option. I also have at least three other sizes of male bears roaming around getting into people's cabins and dumpster diving. They have become unafraid of people and are real threat to children. Thanks for your information.

I would rather put a heavy ball in a bear if i had the choice. I would start puttin some sting into them bears or there is gonna be a bad problem. 1 is bad enough but when you get a group it is hard to deal with and will only get worse. If a bear got into my garage that is close enough for death in my eyes. I don't like to mess around with them as they can get mean. If the mom has cubs and is trash tearin the cubs are learnin this too. Very bad situation. The sooner it is handled the better everybody, including the bears will be.

The Commie era Mosins will shoot any 7.62x54r you can put in them, When it comes to surplus I just shoot whatever is the cheapest. If I want accuracy I would load my own. Home defence? I keep a shotgun close to hand and a .45 revolver under the pillow.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
