Polish M44 number below butt plate
Please take a look at the numbers I found underneath the butt plate on my Polish M44. It reads M49. Is this normal for a Polish M44?

Re: Polish M44 number below butt plate
I have a 1952 Polish M44 and it doesn't have numbers like that. I haven't pulled the buttplate so I don't know what's under the plate but I just pulled it down and looked at the buttplate and it's not stamped like that. Just the serial numbers are on it.

I had to pull the butt plate to see either number. There should be some pic in my gallery from a previous posting. Take a look please.

Re: Polish M44 number below butt plate
Assembly number would be my guess, my Pole M44 is a brand new rifle so I never pulled the buttplate to peek under it.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Looks great i'm very fond of the pole 44's mine is not new in any shape. The blueing is almost no existent but the stock is pretty has scars but beech wood is a beautiful wood with the wild grain. Mine didn't have any numbers on the stock but has the diamond with OW in it which is faint but it's there. I got a sling from Rick Reich that he said was polish but it looks like none of the other pole slings I have seen. I'll get a pic of it up and see what you guys think. Mine also has a hungarian bolt in it other than that it matches. Thanks for the pics.

Re: Polish M44 number below butt plate
Mark my Pole has the same OW in the diamond and I bought a sling from Liberty Tree Collectors last year that was sold as a Polish M44 sling. I hope it actually is because it was $30. It is about a foot shorter than any of the other slings I have including the ones that came with my 2 Russian M44s. Here's a picture of the rifle. It's the best picture I have of the sling.MarkB wrote:Looks great i'm very fond of the pole 44's mine is not new in any shape. Here is some pics of my sling and dog collars. The dog collars are absurdly long.

Re: Polish M44 number below butt plate
Got a picture of the whole sling? It puts things in perspective. My sling for the most part looks exactly like the M91/30 slings I have except for being shorter. When I bought that sling I'd never even seen a sling for a Mosin Nagant and I only had the one Mosin Nagant. When I bought the rifle 13 years ago it came with nothing but the rifle itself. I bought the accessories from Liberty Tree Collectors specifically because it was all listed as Polish. I've never even given it thought until the other night when someone asked about buying a Polish Sling and was having trouble finding one specically listed as for a M44. That's when I went to look at mine and dug out the receipt to see what I'd ordered and how much it cost. I now have 17 Mosin Nagants that all came with slings except the PU Sniper and all are longer than this one.
Re: Polish M44 number below butt plate
I'll try and get a pic of the whole sling on here tomorrow it is a bit shorter than my 91/30 sling. Rick Reich told me he had some pole slings and other stuff for a m44 and that is what he sent me so I guess it is a pole sling he would know but I haven't seen em look like mine.

Re: Polish M44 number below butt plate
My Polish sling is the green one I believe ( I have so many slings I get confused) I will have to check the pics as the sling is on the rifle and both are packed away just now. Back then there were no Soviet slings coming in yet , and the sling came from the distributor with the rifle along with a cleaning kit.

Hey Weldon I couldnt fit the whole sling in one pic so I snapped 2 pics to try and simulate the whole thing. Sorry my cell is a pile of crap. Hope you can see it from these pics.

The Pics look fine, and that sling does look like one I picked up years back that I was told was Polish. The issued sling that is, the unissued one was greenish.

Re: Polish M44 number below butt plate
Well the dogcollars are missing from the picture and they might give someone a clue as to what this sling is. Having something in the picture to give the subject perspective helps sometimes too. I can see from the corner of the laptop that sling looks to be shorter than others which lends itself to being a Carbine sling. That and the fact the boss has one like it. Here's an idea too. You can curl the sling into an S and maybe get it all in the same shot.Junk Yard Dog wrote:"Sorry my cell is a pile of crap" The idea of a camera that takes pictures of any kind is still very Dick Tracy to meThe Pics look fine, and that sling does look like one I picked up years back that I was told was Polish.
