Westinghouse nagant "what is this brass badge on the stock?"

Post by hamster »

I have a mosin nagant made by westinghouse. I have done some research on the rifle and found that it is a U.S. made nagant under contract back in 1915. It has an SA stamp inside a box that appears to mean it was once in Finnish hands. There is a D on the receiver that means it's a 762x54 shooter. But what really stumps me is this brass circle plate on the side of the stock that says HKK22? I have seen them on swedish mousers and others but not on a nagant and what does it mean? The gun has matching numbers on the receiver, bolt and buttplate. Any answers to if this is some kind of arsenal badge and who put them on nagants would be appreciated. Two pics are of a gun with markings like mine for ref., the pic of the stock is my gun.

Very nice! Send it to me! :Drool1:

Not too many of them left as the discs were ordered removed to prevent troop location information.

Here's one of mine.

The unit disc was removed early on during the war to not make it easy for the enemy to track troop movements by examining captured rifles. Only one of my M91's still has an original disc, some slipped through the cracks and were not removed. Nice find :)

I brought him over from another forum, I couldn't find any more info than it might be a Finn unit tag, I know there's somewhere out there that you can find out exactly what unit it was but I have yet to find it on google, figured one of you Mosin aficionados could help him more, if nothing else I knew it was something else for y'all to drool over...

What a great rifle, thanks for showing it to us. Please do post some nice LARGE pictures. I have found this forum software supports pics 900 pixels wide without complaint and that will allow us to drool over our keyboards more easily . . .

Very nice! Stock discs are really hard to find. Best on a curve logo Westinghouse.

One question. What letter is on the receiver tang on top? Westinghouses were made in three separate factories, and both of my curve logo NEWs are marked with a 'H' on the top tang. That is the Hill plant. The other two major ones are 'E' for East Springfield, and 'M' for Meridian.

Many thanks to mogunner for showing me the way to this forum.... I have never been on another forum with people that were so quick to help with questions, welcome a newbie, and keep things fun..... I think i'll stay. Homer2 the receiver tang says E. Here are a few pics of the rifle. I have a mismatched #'s shooter mosin that came to me with a bore that looked like an industrial era sewer pipe, but after an electrolysis bath and a bore brush hooked to a drill it's a pretty nice shooter now. The westinghouse on the other hand when checked with a bore light it's like looking into the sun, I have never seen such a shiny bore on a milsurp..... so I haven't shot it more than one test outing. I haven't shot the mosin much recently because starting the new family has taken a good chunk of my free time so when I do get to go shoot I find myself gravitating toward the svt40 or that wonderful wonderful 8mm Hakim that blows holes through 1/2" plate :)

It's not often that I tell a guy he has a nice rack, but this is definitely one of those times... nice collection you have there!
