I'm not a big classic fan either. They pimp shined (read: chromed) tokarevs and mosins, so I wouldn't be surprised if they don't get the warmest reception ever.

Rifle is a 1944 Tula with force-matched bolt and mag plate-no line outs.
My first sniper essentially (have a scopeless Samco example). They've never done anything for me, but I needed one to fill the hole. I don't plan on shooting it-I don't even plan on cleaning the cosmo off of this one as its all set for storage.

Let's see the Samco! Or send it to me, I'll find some original cloths for it! :D

I find that when I go to the range, I still shoot my first one quite often. I can understand the fact that not firing it might be appealing. If it was me and I was not going to shoot it, I too would leave it in the cosmoline. I am up to 11 Mosins, all different in their own way, and only about 5 have been shot by me. Only because I have not got to them yet. I will eventually get to them all. I enjoy buying them, because I enjoy getting them out and studying them, or looking at different things at different times. Maybe tonight I'll be looking at the blued bolt on my 1938 Finn 91/30.

I don't shoot 90% of my collection, Oh, I have shot most of them in the past when ammo was cheap or available. I enjoy the history in all this, if it was just to shoot I could haul out my commercial sporters and shoot all day nice little groups on the paper. My sporters are better shooters than most of my milsurps anyway, they are mostly bought brand new so that's expected of them. However commercial rifles, unless they are old family heirlooms, have no history other than their design and were it might fit into firearms development history. The milsurps drip history, these are relics that were part of all the things written about in the history books. I have milsurps that are incredibly good shooters, a nice extra because I never bought a single milsurp in my collection because I thought it would be a good shooter. I could care less how they shoot, if they shoot well then all the better, if not I still have my Savage 110, and Marlin 1895 among others that are good shooters.

The feeling you get when you fire an old war girl is hard to duplicate. I also love the history. I enjoy taking say the 1890 gew out though for a turn. You just don't get that with the sporters  :Drool1:

Range Report

Post by WeldonHunter »

I meant to post this in the thread I made about my rifle. Post fail, DOH!

I got a message from Fred_G yesterday and in my reply asked if he felt like doing some shooting at my place today. Well since he was in bad need of some shooting therapy the answer was a resounding YES. He brought his M91/30, a 22lr that he's had since he was a kid and two pistols. He can tell you what the were.I know one is a 1911. I had already decided I needed to sight in the M91/30 PU and also took the Stevens Model 62 project gun out. I never shot it. I was to busy with the PU. We put a 100yd target, two 50yd and a close range target for him to work on drawing and firing. We never got to the 100yd target. The field is a bit high now and there was a fair amount of tall grass in front of it. That and it's a far walk to check it. Besides we were having fun with the 50yd targets. I shot the PU with the scope removed first just to see if it was really off because the front site is pushed way right. After the first round of shots it appeared to be shooting right of the target and I thought for some reason the front site might need to be pushed left. I always get this backwards. Old brain just isn't what it used to be. I also noticed the site post was bent to the right so after another 5 shots to confirm I decided to remove the site and turn it around and reinstall it with it centered and go from there. Well that was wrong but we'd already figured that out before I shot it. Fred_G thought about it and said "that's going to make it shot even further right" which it did. I shot at the target above the first one and though I was shooting at the center target it was hitting the target to the right of it perfectly. We're talking a foot or more away from where I was aiming. Keep in mind I was only about 3 or 4 inches front the bull's-eye the very first time I shot it. One was actually a bull's-eye but that was luck because all the rest were grouped to the right. I reinstalled the sight and straightened the site post. It was back where it was before so I moved it a bit further to the right. Then it was better. Not perfect but good enough for now.

Then I mounted the scope back on it and shot 5 rounds. Now keep in mind I cleaned it and moved the knobs some to see that they worked. I'm not sure if it was back where it was when I pulled it out of the box but it was fairly close. One flyer and the others were a bit high, 2 to 3 inches or so. I did a small adjustment and it was about the same with the next group (2). So I adjusted it some more and it was way off with that group (3). More adjustment on group (4) and it was better and by group (5) it was maybe at 1.5 to 2.0 MOA. This was all shot with the 1946/188 Russian leadcore. Then it was Fred_G's turn. His decided to use some of the 1975/188 silver tip as well as some of the 1946/188 Russian leadcore. He shot the 1975/188 first and it was where we'd expected it with one flyer (1). Then he loaded up the 1946/188 and it was to the left where his other flyer was about and high about 2 inches. Maybe he pulled it or the ammo shots different but I was on target with that same ammo and if anything I'd expect the newer steelcore to shot different but it was right in the middle. Go figure. Since we'd been shooting for a few hours and it was getting late we called it a day.

Fred_G shot all of his guns and I shot maybe 60 to 70 Rounds maybe more, I wasn't counting. He's coming up aging next weekend and maybe the one after that and we'll be trying some different ammo and further targets. I have to get used to this rifle. I'm planning on using it for deer this year so I need to get too know it. We also want to get in as much shooting as possible because bow season starts at the end of the month and I don't want to be shooting while people are hunting around here. Fun day. I'll add descriptions of the targets. Oh and I had one failure to fire. The primer looks like it's pushed in and it appears to not have an anvil under it. I mean it's hit hard and deep but the primer is concave looking. and is not seated near the top of the cartridge. May have been pushed in to far from the factory or if there's no anvil for it to strike it was pushed in by the firing pin. One other thing about this 1946 ammo. It's had one case/neck split and it was hard to extract most times. It was a pain in the butt at times but not a deal killer. The 1974/188 was like butter to use. Easy extraction just about every time.

A few of the firearms and the range. The first one is the PU without the scope.

The round that misfired on left and one that was ok right. Both the same ammo, 1946/188.

The split case 1946/188. Only one out of about 70+ rounds of this ammo fired.

First and second group with the M91/30 PU Sniper with no scope.

If you look at the top right corner target, that was the first group after I reversed the front sight. Problem is I was aiming at the top center target. That's how far off doing that made it. I then put the sight back the way it was and shot the next two groups at the center target again.
Image

This is the next two groups. The 1 is with no adjustment the 2 is with some slight adjustment. Good enough for now.

Image

This is with the scope mounted back and no adjustment done as it came out of the box.

Image

This is the next group above it with a slight adjustment.

Image

This is the second group on the same target. They're marked with a 2 and if you notice in the upper corner there's an X and a 1 with a 2 next to it. That's because I had two rounds go through the same hole.

Image

This one is the next groups 3, 4 and 5. The 3 group was actually after an adjustment in the wrong direction and was aimed at the lower target where 1 and 2 where shot. The 4 and 5 were aimed at this target with slight adjustments while doing it. The 5 group was the last and was end result. The marker is for perspective. The black cap on the pen is 2 inches long. This was at 50yds.

Image

This is the whole target with the notes of how much I was changing the scope just to show the progress. On the 3rd and 4th group I made no windage adjustment but on the 5th group I turned it .5+ from zero. Still needs fine tuning but that's for later.

Image

This is Fred_G's 2 groups with the PU sniper using 1975/188 factory Russian sliver tip for group 1 and 1946/188 factory Russian lead core for group 2. No adjustments were done for either.

Looks like you had some fun, that is the split cases we have been hearing about with the 40's Soviet ammo, looks nasty all right. Good shooting :)

I would be in hog heaven if I had a place to shoot like you do. I would be making some steel plate gong targets. Phooey on paper when you have a wonderland like that! Oh man I want to come for a visit!

When I got this Fred_G got a tin of it and with what I have we've shot a bunch of it with only one FTF and that one split case. I've never had a FTF with any Mosin ammo but I do have a fair amount of split cases with other, newer production ammo. With different rifles too. I've had some of the newer stuff split almost all the way down to the base. Scarey sometimes.

Russell gongs are on the to get list. I do need to be careful though because I suspect there'll be some flyers and to the left of the range up over the field about 800 to 1000yds is a neighbors house. I doubt any would make that far but it's possible. Where we're shooting is down into kind of a low spot in the field.

Russell you have an open invitation to come shot anytime you want. Ya'll come.
