Need help with my Mossberg .22

Post by websterz »

My model 145b bolt-action Mossy has a feeding problem that I can't pin down. The last 2 rounds from the tube feed into the receiver together and jam the action. Every time, regardless of ammo type or brand, whether there are 2 rounds in the tube or a full load. Everything chambers and ejects perfectly until the last 2 rounds...puzzles the crap out of me! Aside from counting shots and topping off before a jam where should I start? I have had the gun down to screws-n-springs many times, thoroughly cleaned and lubed everything, no joy. This little rifle is the most accurate .22 I have ever owned but I need it to be reliable too. Any ideas?

Not at the moment, none of my .22's has ever had this problem. Only trouble I ever had with a Mossberg .22 was with a semiauto that would sometimes go full and empty the mag.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Does it have a tube magazine or box mag? It sounds like it is magazine related to me.

If your going to replace any parts I would start with the mag spring, then if nothing changes look into the condition of what keeps the round in the mag. I'm not familiar with how that particular rifle works. But thats where I would start :)

There must be some sort of cartridge stop / lifter?? I would check that out as well as any wear or damage to the cartridge follower and magazine spring. Any chance of some pics of the rounds feeding up from the magazine?

I did another springs-n-screws teardown today then took it to the range. I put a hundred or so thru it and the double-feed issue didn't re-appear. The only problem was a failure to eject the final spent casing of each mag load. It's simple enough to flick that one out with my pinkie...I can live with it. No pics but after I dialed in the new glass I got one ragged half-dollar sized hole at 50 yards.
