Re: M91 options

M91's never had scopes on them. Scopes and snipers started after the M91/30's came out. Never say never when talking Mosin's. This picture surfaced out of the Finnish National Archives a few years ago. The location and time frame was unknown but is likely sometime in 1944 or later since the third r...

Re: M91/M91-30 Hex receiver strenth

Thanks to all for all the info in this great thread. I have wondered for many years what kind of steel was used for Mosin receivers and barrels, and recently Ratnik posted this chart showing the composition and heat treatments used for the rifles(at least for the rifles in the 1930's). I think this ...

Re: The old girl still has it

That's sorta mind-blowing. It looks to me like it would be harder to drill a hole dead center thru a gun barrel and put in a liner, than it would to make a new barrel. Haas anyvone else ever done that? The process was used by the Italians and other countries. The "Salerno" process was dev...

Re: The old girl still has it

Did the Finns make the P series rifles before they started making barrels? Before the "Salerno" relining process beginning in 1925, a small batch of Finnish Barrels were made by the Suomen Ampumatarvikehhedas in Riihimäki. Very few of these SAT Riihimäki M91 survive. Also, In 1925, Tikkak...

Re: I just bought this mosin...

IIRC the SAT mark was an early mark and only a small handful or known . You have a 1942 Tikka barreled M91 that just has the SA in close relation to the Tikka T. It is too bad someone refinished it, but for the price paid you did not get screwed. Drool time on these SAT Riihimäki's. On the Tikka 91...

Re: Knurled and scalloped cocking knob?

I've got matching Tula's 36-40 and all have the smaller, perfectly round cocking knobs :vconfused: Most 91-30's we encounter were force matched or rematched during the refurb process, and then stored away until we could enjoy them years and years later :) . The refirb's will have any number of diff...

Re: Knurled and scalloped cocking knob?

Kinda odd. I have guys saying from 20's or 30's, to wartime simplifications at Izh in '41 and Tula in '42?????? Checking some other sites to see if the opinions there differ. Just look at factory matching rifles and everything will be obvious. Befus, I always thought this change, like many changes,...

Re: GB find

Well, I would say that everything lines up here. Cossack=Imperial Izhevsk. The bolt might not be from a Cossack but it is appropriate for and could have been from a Cossack, i.e., it's an Imperial Izhevsk bolt. Although I will admit that the bolts for these guns came from a bin of bolts much the sa...

Re: My New M91 Finn

Congratulations on your new B Barrel butcharoot. It should be a joy to shoot as these rifles cans be very accurate. Good chance that it was refinished in the US but you never know. You can see a few blondes hanging on the wall in this SA_KUVA pic from the winter war. Denny

Re: Tula M38

Cool splice on the Izhevsk vitaminboy and congrats on both carbines. I would be really interested in seeing a pic of the Tula tang date as I am wondering if it is a 1940 dated Tula. The 1940 Tula M38's ( that we only know of a handful) of were assembled at #74 Izhevsk factory from 1940 produced 91-3...

Re: M28 Rear Sight Leaf Question

This question has come up before with these parts from LT, and there were other suggestions but no answer as I recall * The M27 sliders were removed and replaced with M28/Imperial * Some M24's have a similar leaf and slider assembly * Alien replacement? :) I will rule out Alien influences as it doe...

Re: Is a 1898 Sestroryetsk worth $350 ?

Trying to decode this old war horse. Been searching Google for the various markings like the small k and the crown shown in the picture. Then there's this on the stock. One hundred and twenty one years of stories locked up in the old girl. ASE = Asevarikko which is basically an arms depot and repai...

Re: M28 Rear Sight Leaf Question

The new sight from LT looks to be from a M27. Maybe someone used a small file to open up the V notch for a little better sight picture. I would call LT....they have always had excellent customer service. Denny **Added** Here is a pic from Palokangas Vol.II Pg. 51. It shows how the M28 mounting screw...

One of these might work ok. You could darken the sling up with a little Pecards or similar product Denny
