Quick Ballpark Value

I'm going to look at a 1917 Remington in the next few days. I know nothing about it, shape, bore, import marks, nothing...other than it doesn't have matching numbers & was supposed to have been used in the Spanish Civil War. Is it safe to assume this rifle is worth no more than the going rate of...

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

Got a little feel good. Headspace gauges came in & it checks good. If I can get the smithy to look at it Monday & say it's ok, this thing goes to the range at the 1st opportunity.

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

The bolt was completely disassembled & cleaned, but it has always hung up just shy of full vertical. I'll take a look at the cam area in the video & see if I can rectify it. I've read so much of this site already that my eyes are crossed. Of course I should've come here BEFORE I bought the w...

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

I almost lost my dinner when I read cerakote. Welcome to the forum. :) Lol. Thanks. Just seeing if anyone was awake. I'll probably let the gunsmith take a look at it. Might help to check headspace when the gauges come too. Hopefully it's more cosmetic, I don't know. I've been inspecting aircraft fo...

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

WeldonHunter, after looking at your pics again after I posted, the cutout area seems the same, although the flake came from this area. I'm assuming that's ok for the extractor.

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

I think these pics are about as good as it gets. It's still hard to see how sharp & rough the thin area is. There's a ding in it too, as well as in the thicker area. I can take it to a gunsmith on Monday who may check it for free, I'm not sure. I don't know when my headspace gauges will be here,...

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

I'm not counting it out at all. I really want to fire it, I just want it safe to do so. I'll see if I can try for more pics again tonight. I'm good with the old school operations of Mosins, I think that's part of what makes them interesting. I have a 72 Ford Bronco that still has a 3 on the tree as ...

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

I tried to get more pics, but it's really hard to get the problem area well. The best way I can describe it is that the thinner area of the chamber face is recessed well past the thicker one (WeldonHunter, was yours excessively lower?). I checked out a couple of Mosins at a local gun shop today. Bot...

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

That whole area on mine looks jagged. Yours looks much better. Maybe some of that on mine is the result of steel cleaning rods, I don't know. I just want to feel safe shooting it...I was considering skipping it, but I have go/no go gauges in the mail. Oh, whatever grease they used is being a pain in...

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

In the never ending fight to clean the cosmoline out, I noticed the chamber face. There was a flake of something, I couldn't tell what, but it made me look at the area it came from. The pics aren't that great, but does this look normal? I've never had a weapon that didn't have a thick, uniform face....

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

Thanks, that's a lot of reading. There's almost too much info out there on these things. It's very interesting, but it's taking up too much of my time lol. Definitely some great history with these rifles. Wish I could shoot it, but I really don't know when it'll be. I'm pretty happy with it, but I w...

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

Just read through that entire thread. Good reading. I think you're correct on the ammo, the loose rounds I got with the spam can were silver tipped. Thanks.

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

Great info & fast! Thank you. It'll still be a while before I can take this one to the range, but I'm looking forward to it. I could be going to Arizona for 90 days for work too. Sucks to have it sit in the safe for so long. I'll post up how it shoots when I finally get to do it. Here's the ammo...

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

Thanks. I'm sure I'll leave it all as is. Couple more questions. First, I've read about how bad the aftermarket stripper clips are. Do they really work? I have an unopened spam can of ammo. Will there be stripper clips in there as there are in US ammo boxes? I know I can load without them, just curi...

Re: First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

Thanks all. Good info. I can't do it right now, but I'll strip, clean, & go through it completely before it goes to the range. It came with a bayonet & cleaning kit, so the only thing I'm lacking is a sling. So far, I'm liking more than i thoughti would.

What to do with Receiver Cover

I had a Russian SKS years ago. It was sold while I was out of the country, but I had put a scope on the rifle & the receiver cover didn't go with it. I hate to throw it away, but there's no way to find the rifle now. Any ideas on what I should do with it?

First Mosin & a Couple of Questions

Hi. After quite a while of thinking about it, I finally picked up an Izhevsk 91/30. Looking to cerakote the metal in pastel pink & paint the stock hot pink. Psych! Just joking. It isn't anything super special or rare, but it was the one I came across & so far the numbers match, except for th...

Re: New Members, Make your first post here!

New member with my 1st Mosin. It's still in cosmoline, which looks to be a pain to clean. I'll post up a thread on it with pics shortly.
