Re: New Bolt Head
I buy the Novosibirsk online thru Ammunitionstore.com; it's now $8.99 for a box of 20. Unfortunately, you won't get much cheaper shooting, unless you go to 7.62x39, and then the gun (ak-47) will cost 3-5 times more than buying a Mosin. I guess either shoot your Mosin and put up with finicky ammo, o...

Re: New Bolt Head
Entropy: I have no idea how he does the reloads. I figure he does them right, becuase he really enjoys it, and says he considers himself more of a relaoder than a shooter. And he's been doing it for about 50 years or so, too. Any of the four types of ammo I've tried can be dropped right into the cha...

As far as I know, it shouldn't be a big deal. They're all supposed to be basically interchangeable.

Re: New Bolt Head
Well, it's been over a month of trial and error, but I think I've finally discovered it's the ammo. Because sanding the bolt didn't work, a new bolt head didn't work, an entire new bolt didn't work, and cleaning out the chamber with a brush chucked in the drill didn't work. So I got a box of PPU and...

Re: New Bolt Head
I only have a no-go gauge, and it passes. I've used surplus from a spam can, Russian non-corrosive ammo from a box, and some loads a buddy gave me. I think they've all been problematic, the handloads the least, if I remember. They must've been brass.

Re: New Bolt Head
I didn't end up finishing the sanding yesterday. Got sort of burned out on it and said enough was enough. So as far as I got was to bring back that surface enough so that it's contacting in the middle now instead of the edge. I had started with 1200 grit, which wasn't effective enough at removing me...

Re: New Bolt Head
Okay, guys, here’s my progress. I removed the extractor and tried operating the bolt with and without a round, and found that it still operates the same no matter what. So it’s not an extractor issue, or a burr. Just for the heck of it, though, I got in there with a bent paperclip and q-tips and cle...

Re: New Bolt Head
Any possibility of a case separation? That certainly would cause the bolt to not close with two diferent bolt heads, and wouldn't be an obvious thing. Have you looked into the chamber itself and checked for this? I would assume you'd have noticed if you'd fired a round and exctracted only the rear ...

Re: New Bolt Head
Everytime we get one of these threads where this is happening, and the extractor has been removed and cleaned underneath, and does extract properly by clipping onto the rim of the cartridge, it seems that after pulling out a lot of hair it turns out to be a burr in the chamber area. Think about it....

Re: New Bolt Head
Okay. Makes me think I should have gotten the go-gauge, too. Wonder what it would tell me?

Re: New Bolt Head
I'll try a live round in the chamber face without using the bolt when I get home.

Re: New Bolt Head
The problem is not extraction, the rifle has failed to pass headspace using the No/Go headspace gauge twice. He has swapped the bolt head and the rifles is still a fail. Wait, it's not supposed to close on the no-go, so it's passed with both bolt heads, right? EDIT: Weldon, you beat me to it, and I...

Re: New Bolt Head
I guess this is turning into another troubleshooting discussion after all! I started thinking maybe there was something to the idea that it's just a sticky bolt issue. So I started researching all the techniques for dealing with that. But now I'm noticing that people who complain of this issue have ...

Re: New Bolt Head
Okay, got the new bolt, put it in, aaaaaaand it doesn't work any better. It might be worse. I have problems opening the bolt now, too, instead of just closing. The only difference I can see between this new bolt head and the old one is the extractor on the new one doesn't stick out quite as high. Mu...

Re: New Bolt Head
I've had the extractor out twice trying to bend it so it can definitely catch the rim. And I've used sandpaper on all the edges, too. If there's a burr in the chamber, then what? Seems like when I started my original thread on the problem, no one thought it was sticky bolt syndrome. But I'll consid...

Re: New Bolt Head
I did end up ordering an ebay one. We'll see how it works out. Thanks, Junk Yard Dog, no worries! Entropy, I don't know that it is a headspace issue. The gauge said it was okay, and I've shot it a lot, so I hope I haven't been shooting it and it's not safe! The bolt closes on some of the rounds with...

Really? I never heard that. I thought it was a simple fix.entropy wrote:You'll have to hope it works; they aren't numbered like Enfield bolt heads, according to wear. It might take a few to find the right one.
