Re: Is it wrong
I don't know where you get your information, but Russians are critical of their Soviet past more then you care to believe. We still have to own up to empowering, training and arming Islamic militants. I heard plenty of lies and spin coming from our government as well. I actually listen to both sides...

Re: Is it wrong
1. It is wrong, because it alters historical artifact. 2. It is wrong, because these rifles either were rejected or barrels shot out to meet the accuracy requirment for a sniper. 3. It is wrong, because it turns an old military weapon in to Bubba's weekend project, that no one cares about. 4. It is ...

Re: Is it wrong
Please try to bring this conversation back to the OP's original question. Is it wrong to re-sniper and ex- sniper" Dolk Would it make you feel better if I say it is wrong five more times? I only mentioned another reason why returning these rifles to sniper configuration doesn't make sense. The...

Re: Is it wrong
Zeebill, There is a lot of reliable information about Mosins out there. You just have to read Russian and understand all of the nuances of shooting. There was also an official 91/30 sniper manual published by the Soviet Ministry of Defense. I believe that's where I saw .75MOA specs for group. Specul...

Re: Is it wrong
My information comes from extensive knowledge and experience in shooting sports and reading Russian literature on how accurate Mosins are selected A. A. Yuryev, 2nd edition. I am also a holder of Distinguished Rifleman badge and a winner of National level trophy. I know what's possible and impossibl...

Re: Is it wrong
Yes, and they should be left that way. Absolutely. That's the history of that particular rifle. There are shelves full of commercial scoped rifles that will out shoot even the best Mosin sniper, why ruin historical artifact. I don't necessarily agree with everything collectors preach, but this one ...

Re: Is it wrong
It doesn't matter if the rifle was shot and rejected at the factory or when it was issued. Most of them are not retired snipers, they are snipers that were rejected and turned in to regular rifles. That was my original point.

Re: Is it wrong
Seems like a wasteful way to go about it, would have made more sense to simply produce a higher quality barrel specifically for sniper use. The PU sniper requires modifications to both receiver and wood, time consuming and requiring skilled labor, then there is the bolt handle, lot of effort just t...

Re: Is it wrong
From what I read the requirment was under 0.75 MOA group. Very few people can hold that hard with iron sights. Most likely there was initial selection, but the only way to tell how the barrel will group is to test fire. Even the best barrel makers of today will make an occasional lemon and that's ma...

Re: Is it wrong
Too many "ex-snipers" around. I would bet that most of them were tried and rejected for sniper use, rather then retired sniper rifles. They had to put a scope on them to tell how they group.

As Russians would say:
Mosin-Nagant needs a 10rd magazine like priest needs harmonica.

Re: 10 round mosin nagant magazine
The difference between "being worked on" and reliably functioning could be years or never, especially when it comes to magazines.

Re: I have a problem with my Mosin sniper
I have a Snap On color screen digital bore scope and can check the chamber, but the flexible camera shaft is 8mm, just too snug for the 30 cal bore. I can get a 5.5mm flex shaft but it is 225.00. I don't want it that bad. Besides, looking that closely to the bore of a rifle you love can make you no...

Re: I have a problem with my Mosin sniper
There is a tool that lets you scope the chamber and bore, Hawkeye. It's very expensive. A lot of benchrest shooters have that tool. It is also used by aviation mechanics. Seeing is better then guessing.

Re: Am I on the right track thinking laminated stocks
I don't know about the quality of laminated stocks on Mosins, but generaly laminated stock is considered preferable to plain wood stock. It is less likely to warp from absorbing moisture. Most of modern high priced target rifle stocks that are still made of wood, made of laminated wood.

Re: What Is You're Mosin History? If Known
So at first I knew that my mosin was just sitting on the wall for decoration since I was like 5....I'm 23 now. I asked about the rifle because in a couple days I'll be shooting it. The rifle I will hold in my hands is the same rifle my grandpa escaped from Germany after being captured and forced to...

Re: new mosin owner need a lil info
A very good suggestion if it's available close to you, if you are young enough you can also join the Marines and get the marksmanship training from professionals while getting paid to do it. For some of us no amount of training will help, a man gets old and things go to hell  Boot Camp is not ...

Re: new mosin owner need a lil info
Gentlemen, Do yourself a favor. Check with your State's Rifle & Pistol Association about highpower rifle clinic or SAFS (Small Arms Firing School). It is usually offered in the spring. 1 to 2 day course, class lecture and life fire. Best thing you can do for your shooting. You will be coached by...

Steam is not a good thing for shellack finish. All you needed to do is wipe off cosmoline with a dry rag and wipe it off again if needed.
