Re: Went to go pick up my Mosin today, left with two guns
This is a rifle that was refurbished by the Soviets after WW2, during the process the rifles were stripped down to the last bit and the parts were refurbished and inspected with thousands of like parts, at the end of the line the barreled receivers were reassembled into rifles without regard for wh...

Re: Went to go pick up my Mosin today, left with two guns
I can't quite make out your serial number, but it looks like it ends in 96? Maybe Someone adopted the Mauser practice of only stamping the last two numbers. :vconfused: Beat me. 4M96 is what is on the barrel. Also, although you can't see it well in the pic, there is actually an arrow in the star. I...

Re: Went to go pick up my Mosin today, left with two guns
Here's an interesting marking on the butt of the gun: http://i.imgur.com/5J93a.jpg Considering there are Izhevsk and Tula markings on it, and then what appears to be a previous serial number "scratched out" with a new one that matches the barrel leads me to believe (I'm no expert) that the...

Re: Went to go pick up my Mosin today, left with two guns
The Yugo is about flawless from what I can tell. I'm very happy with it. I'll post more pictures of it if requested, but I figured since this was a Mosin forum I would stay on topic ;) After taking this thing completely apart and putting it back together to clean it, I can understand why it was so w...

Re: Went to go pick up my Mosin today, left with two guns
The gunsmith had already cleaned it up, even though it's an "unfired reissue". I walked out the door with it for $400. Definitely stoked to take him and his older brother to the range!desdem12 wrote:That is a fine pair. The yugo looks real clean. How much was that SKS? SWEET![]()

Re: Went to go pick up my Mosin today, left with two guns
It's a Yugo M59/66. ice '42 Tula, but the pics are a bit fuzzy, what are the details? Sounds like you know more than I do... it's a '42 Tula 91/30. All the numbers match and the stock is about perfect except for a small nick towards the front of the barrel. I'll post better pics once I get it cleane...

Re: Do I even want to remove the cosmoline?
I hope you are not talking about refinishing the stock? That and add a bunch of tacti-cool items to it :P I'm kidding, I would never do that, and I can't imagine why anybody would. If anything I'm thinking that if the stock shows age that might even be a good thing in another 50 years. I'm eve...

Re: Do I even want to remove the cosmoline?
Cleaning regularly will keep the rifle rust free, this works well until you hit 20 rifles or so, then you start to notice the amount of time you are spending oiling up rifles. Once it hits 50 rifles yo are setting aside hours a week for the task, past 100 and it's just impossible without a full tim...

Re: Do I even want to remove the cosmoline?
I have 3 all cleaned up and the rest remain in cosmoline. With my other rifles, I figure 3 is enough to keep me happy at the range :) I suppose at the price they're going for these days, you can't just buy one! Unfortunately my gun addiction is starting to exceed my safe-storage capabilities, and I...

Re: Do I even want to remove the cosmoline?
You wouldn't want to have cosmo all over your hands while handling a loaded weapon. :D Hah, no kidding. Although, technically, all guns are always loaded  I guess I'm asking in case there are other ways of preserving it that may have developed in the past 50 years. Perhaps just cleaning it re...

Do I even want to remove the cosmoline?
If cosmoline preserves the gun, and I want it to last, why would I want to clean off the cosmoline?
Obviously I couldn't fire the weapon if I didn't clean it off, but if I'm keeping it for collecting purposes it seems like preserving it would be a good thing.

I'll just "rephrase" what I said that got edited: hobbies are way more fun when they are interactive!
I would never dream of modifying my Mosin. Also, it shipped this morning. I'm excited!

My gf: "Why did you buy another gun?"
"Because I'm a gun collector" her: "That's a good reason" When WeldonHunter told me about these forums, I thought there would be nobody here. Apparently I was way wrong. I convinced a good friend of mine to finally buy his first gun (a Mosin Nagant) because of the cheap price and...
